What will make digital marketing different in 2023?

Why is 2023 so special?

It’s the year we’ll leave the pandemic behind us.

However, it’s also the realization that we accept much more in the digital world than we thought we would.

The digital experiments were conducted over a two-year period, and the best practices are now ready for use.

No, things won’t really change, but we’ve come to realize that living life at full speed doesn’t make us happy—well-being, sustainability, and the joy of missing out (JOMO) are, after all, a few trends that can be considered a valuable legacy of the pandemic.

Generation Z

In addition, there are a number of marketing trends that will shape 2023, driven by Generation Z.

And as they increasingly enter the workforce, their influence will accelerate a marketing trend such as short-form video.

Generation Z is the first generation to have grown up entirely with the internet—they are hugely influential, and the way they present themselves online is part of their identity.

They go for raw, authentic, and fast. The most relevant platforms for this generation are dynamic and visually appealing.

Generation Z shows where and how they want to get involved by showing up where it matters most to them.

In 2023, don't try to bring a Gen Z audience into your world—meet them in theirs.

Understand their unmet needs; prioritize relevance and authenticity over generic content.

Digital Marketing Trends

It is difficult to predict specific trends in digital marketing for 2023, as the field is constantly evolving and new technologies and tactics are always emerging.

Some general marketing trends that are likely to continue or emerge in the coming years include:

1 – Personalization:

As shoppers become accustomed to personalized online experiences, the desire for even greater personalization will grow.

In addition, it is easier to offer personalized content because of the available data, which allows for segmentation based on interests, roles, location, and behavior, for example.

2 – Video marketing:

Video is a powerful tool for attracting and converting customers, and its popularity is expected to continue growing in the coming years.

Companies will adopt video best practices, including live streaming, instructional videos, and short videos on social media.

The accessibility of video marketing has increased dramatically in 2022 because B2B platforms like LinkedIn are making it easier than ever before.

In addition, available statistics (e.g., LinkedIn stats) provide greater certainty about expected returns and indicate maturity.

3 – Creator marketing:

My absolute favorite.

It is, in fact, a democratized approach to marketing that focuses less on quantity and more on the quality of the content.

And, in theory, everyone has the same opportunities.

It is the creators who speak out on behalf of the companies they work for through podcasts and videos.

It is the subject matter experts who make the difference through their knowledge and expertise.

“30% of 18 to 24-year-olds and 40% of 25 to 34-year-olds consider themselves content creators ”HubSpot’s 2022 State of Consumer Trends report

4 – Influencer marketing:

Collaborating with social media influencers and other online personalities can be an effective way for companies to reach and engage their target audiences.

This trend is likely to continue in the coming years.

However, not every brand can afford to partner with international influencers.

It is the niche influencers with a specific group of followers who are more attractive for exerting influence at an affordable price.

Think of influencers in a specific industry, location, or community. In addition, influencer marketing—just like creator marketing—will be the driving force behind dark social and will raise awareness among marketers that quality isn’t always measurable.

— It's interesting to see how LinkedIn is capitalizing on this with its thought leadership ads.

5 – User-generated content:

Encouraging customers to writereviewson key platforms is becoming increasingly important for building trust. This is because prospects prefer to get information from existing customers or users.

It prevents the "We at WC Eend recommend WC Eend"mindset.

6 – Short-form video:

Social media has reduced attention spans to a minimum. For years, YouTube was a trendsetter when it came to video.

With newcomers like TikTok entering the business world, the tendency of social media platforms to copy one another is unprecedented.

YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn Stories, and Instagram Reels are all a resounding success.

And it's not just the younger generation that we can consider to be followers.

And so, as always, B2B marketing will follow the B2C trend by adopting new advertising approaches in order to continue reaching new target audiences.

7 – Artificial intelligence and machine learning:

AI and machine learning will continue to play a greater role in digital marketing, enabling companies to automate and optimize various marketing tasks, such as targeting, personalization, and content creation—as a result, the hype surrounding OpenAI is unstoppable and will lead to far-reaching experiments.

"Our people make the difference." Really? As a former "digital workplace & IT entrepreneur," I've said this for years about my 25 colleagues. But the reality is we were only considered thought leaders by 5% of our target audience. Even today, this remains a common statement from MSPs and IT service providers. But these words lose their meaning if your expertise does not extend beyond your existing customers and a handful of prospects. I now help IT entrepreneurs with thought leadership in their niche.
